NATCHEZ — Cory Sewell’s 4-yard touchdown run and Yohan Thompson’s extra point just past the midway point of the first quarter was all the scoring that was done as the Adams County Christian School Rebels stunned the Oak Forest Academy Yellow Jackets 7-0 Friday night at Bobby Marks Stadium.
ACCS was led by a strong running game and an opportunistic defense.
Even though MAIS Class 6A Oak Forest Academy had nearly three times as many players on its roster as ACCS, the Yellow Jackets couldn’t muster much of any offense.
Sewell’s short-yardage touchdown run occurred at the 4:58 mark of the first quarter. After that, both team’s defenses took over. ACCS had all of its 259 yards on the ground with two 100-yard rushers. DJ Stampley had 13 carries for 119 yards and Claven Dunbar had 24 carries for 116 yards.
The Rebels had 17 first downs and only had one turnover.
The Rebels’ defense held the Yellow Jackets, which was ranked No. 1 in the preseason MAIS Class 6A poll, to just seven first downs and 121 yards of total offense while forcing three turnovers.
Sewell had six tackles while Thompson and Blake LaPrairie had four tackles apiece. Sewell as well as Decobus Jackson each had one interception.
ACCS (1-0) plays at Columbia Academy next Friday with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
