NATCHEZ— Memorial services for Earnest C. “Earnie” Newby, 91, who died Jan. 1, 2019, surrounded by his family and his dogs, in the home of his granddaughter, Jennifer Grisham, will be 10 a.m. Friday at the pavilion overlooking the Mississippi River at the Natchez National Cemetery.
He was born Aug. 9, 1927, in Whigam, Ga., the son of Earnest Willie Newby and Elma Adelle Long Newby.
He was raised in Sarasota, Florida, until the outbreak of World War II, at which time his mother moved the family to Ohio to help with the war effort. Earnie convinced his mother to allow him to join the Navy at age 17. After the war, he graduated from the University of Akron with a degree in industrial management. He worked a number of years for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and retired from Armstrong Tire and Rubber Company after 29 years.
Earnie married the love of his life, Virginia Ann Anderson Newby, who preceded him in death on Dec. 7, 2011.
Survivors include three daughters, Cindy Newby Grisham, Terry Newby Greenwell and Donna Newby; one son, Richard Newby; seven granddaughters, Lillian Adelle Grisham, Jennifer Marie Grisham, Jessica Michelle Whitney, Jacqueline Marie Whitney, Julia Elizabeth Whitney, Brittany Alyssa Newby and Lillian Kate Newby; and one grandson, Matthew Allen Grisham.
