NATCHEZ — Tuesday is the primary election day in Adams County, election officials said, and election officials said they are expecting a strong voter turnout.

Adams County Election Commissioner Larry Gardener said local elections typically have a higher voter turnout than most others, and he expects 50 percent or more of the county’s registered voters to vote in this election.

“I think it’s going to be a great voter turnout at the polls,” Gardner said. “That’s usually the case when you have a lot of local candidates. … I expect about 10,000 of the 20,000 registered voters countywide will vote.”

Gardner said the polls would be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

“There are 46 different ballot styles for the Democratic and Republican voters,” Gardner said. “There are a lot of candidates — eight candidates for governor alone on the Democrat side — and there are a number of independent candidates who will appear in the general election once the run-off (Aug. 27) is done.”

Gardner said the general election on Nov. 5 would include all independent candidates and party representatives selected in Tuesday’s primary election.

Gardner said all voters should be prepared to present a photo ID at their precinct and advised they should go to their precinct for county elections and not the city elections unless those precincts happen to be the same.

People who are unsure where they should vote can visit sos.ms.gov and key in their address or call the circuit clerk’s office at 601-446-6326 or election commissioner’s office at 601-445-7905 for verification, Gardner said.

Voter registration cards have also been mailed out that list the location for this election and the city election, Gardner said.

“Get out and vote,” Gardner said. “Let’s see if we can’t get a 60 percent voter turnout — or even 70 percent.”
