NATCHEZ — It was a good day not only for sisters Hannah and Harper Hinckley of McComb but also for Kayla Starr of Natchez and Connor Gee of Madison as the four junior golfers led last weekend at the 2019 Norman Puckett Junior Golf Championship at the Duncan Park Golf Course.
Hannah Hinckley shot a final-round 2-under-par 69 on Sunday to get past Starr and win the girls’ overall championship with a two-day score of 146.
Starr was considered the girl to beat overall after her recent second-place finish at the Mississippi Golf Association Girls Junior Championship.
Hannah also finished first in the girls’ 13-15 division, 19 shots ahead of Harper Hinckley, who had rounds of 80 and 85 to finish at 165. They were the only girls in that division. Hannah had four birdies and just two bogeys in her final round while Harper’s two-day total was good enough for third place overall.
Just two and a half months ago, the Hinckley sisters led Parklane Academy to its first-ever girls’ golf championship, the MAIS Class AAAA state championship.
Starr had the lead in the girls’ overall division after shooting a 75 on Saturday, but she struggled on Sunday on her way to round of 79 and finished second overall with a two-day score of 154.
Despite her final-round struggles on the course on Sunday, Starr easily won the girls’ 16-18 division by a good 20 strokes ahead of Kylie O’Brien, who fired rounds of 86 and 88 to end up with a two-day score of 174. O’Brien came in fourth overall.
Gee overcame a double bogey on the par-4 1st hole with four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 14th hole to shoot a final-round 3-under-par 68 for a two-day score of 144 to not only win the boys’ 14-15 division, but also finish first overall.
Perhaps the surprise of the day on Sunday was the comeback performance by Tanner McKenzie, who overcame a five-shot deficit by firing a final-round 2-under-par 69 for a two-day score of 148 to win the boys’ 16-18 division by one shot over first-round overall and 16-18 division leader Spence Davis as well as Sims Dixon. McKenzie finished second overall.
Davis couldn’t overcome McKenzie’s hard charge and wound up shooting a final-round 75 to finish at 149 while Dixon had a final-round 72 for his 149.
Davis and Dixon ended up tied for third overall with Will Burnham, who finished second in the boys’ 14-15 division after a final-round 72 to finish at 149.
Will Thompson won the boys’ 12-13 division with rounds of 75 and 77 for a two-day score of 152.
Grayson Davis came in second with a two-day score of 159 after shooting a final-round 77. Grayson Lockhart, who led this division after firing a 73 on Saturday, ended up in third place after a disappointing 87 on Sunday to finish at 160.
