NATCHEZ — Barry, now a tropical storm, made landfall near Intracoastal City, La., Saturday afternoon with winds falling to 70 mph.

The storm briefly became a Category 1 hurricane and weakened to a tropical storm as it made landfall about 160 miles west of New Orleans, The Associated Press reported, adding Louisiana officials say “it could still cause disastrous flooding across a wide stretch of the Gulf Coast.”

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant told The Associated Press that parts of the state can still expect heavy rain from Tropical Storm Barry as the storm continues to move slowly northward through Louisiana, adding its outer bands will affect Mississippi.

Adams County Emergency Management Director, Robert Bradford said locals can expect heavy rainfall throughout the night.

“So far nothing has changed,” Bradford said at approximately 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon. “We’re still expecting between 6 and 12 inches of rain and we will continue to monitor for other storm-related damages.”

Severe weather is being monitored in Adams County through Saturday night until Tuesday, said Neifa Hardy, Communication Officer for Adams County Emergency Management.

“The Adams County Safe Room is currently open to those wanting to get out of the weather but we are not classifying it as a shelter at this time,” Hardy said.

The Miss-Lou area also has a marginal risk of tornados and sustained winds between 25 to 35 mph with up to 50 mph gusts, said Guy Murray, Concordia Parish Emergency Preparedness Director.

Hardy said to call 911 and not the main line of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office or the Natchez Police Department in the event of storm-related damages or other emergencies so that emergency responders can track the location of callers and have a faster response.

Sandbags are available 24 hours a day at 35 Majorca Road, the Natchez Public Works Department and the Foster Mound Volunteer Fire Department, Hardy said.

In Concordia Parish, sandbags are available at the Concordia Parish Correctional Facility in Ferriday and the Concordia Fire Department on Airport Road in Vidalia, Murray said.
