The forecast track for Tropical Storm Barry in the Gulf of Mexico has been moved eastward, increasing the chances for heavy rain in the Miss-Lou.
The National Weather Service’s Thursday morning forecast is projecting a low-end hurricane to come ashore Saturday morning between Lafayette and Morgan City, dumping upwards of 20 inches of rain across south Louisiana.
In the Miss-Lou, up to 15 inches of rain is predicted for areas in Southwest Mississippi, including Wilkinson and Adams County. Concordia Parish could see up to 10 inches of rainfall in some areas already dealing with flooding and high water.
The slow movement of the system will result in a long duration of heavy rainfall through the region through the weekend and potentially into early next week, NWS officials said. Barry also has the potential to bring wind hazards to the area.
Weather forecasters emphasize the storm is still unpredictable for “unmature” weather systems like the one in the Gulf and that the storm could change course or go in a different direction than forecast.
“The run-to-run consistency in the track models have been poor, so confidence in the details of the forecast is not high at this moment,” the National Hurricane Center said in its 4 a.m. advisory Thursday.
