NATCHEZ — The waterfowl and other wildlife of the St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge are on the lookout for a few good friends.

Monday evening, supporters of the wildlife refuge in south Adams County are hosting an informational meeting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians, 400 Jefferson Davis Boulevard, in hopes of reviving the Friends of St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge group.

St. Catherine Creek NWR Administrative Officer Julie Burks said the Monday meeting will give the public more information about the Friends group and efforts to improve the visitor experience at the refuge.

“We want to re-establish the group and get it going,” Burks said. “There was a group but it has since disbanded. We want to revive the group.”

The Friends of St. Catherine Wildlife Refuge is a nonprofit organization that partners with the refuge on a variety of projects — including education and outreach, habitat management and restoration efforts.

Burks encourages anyone who is interested in the refuge and how the refuge benefits local residents to come to the meeting.

Burks said people can also call the refuge office at 601-442-6696. The office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

St. Catherine Creek Wildlife Refuge is managed as part of the Lower Mississippi River Refuge Complex. Other refuges in the complex include Cat Island and nearby Bayou Cocodrie in Louisiana.

St. Catherine Creek NWR was established in 1990 and contains 24,589 acres of bottomland hardwoods, cypress swamps and other habitats.

The refuge, located seven miles south of Natchez, is an important wintering habitat for migratory waterfowl, including ducks, egrets, wood storks and the nesting spot for bald eagles.
