On Sunday, St. Mary Basilica members bid farewell to the pastor they had known for the past 22 years, the Rev. David O’Connor.
During O’Connor’s tenure he performed 231 marriages, 378 baptisms, 400 funerals, 455 first communions and witnessed 421 confirmations of church members.
O’Connor, however, did more than just perform those duties as the church leader.
He became a pillar of the community and a member of not only the church family but also of many people’s families in the community.
“Retirement feels like leaving an extended family,” O’Connor said of his retirement.
The community feels the same way, O’Connor.
You have helped the community set its goals and achieve its visions.
You have served as the quarterback not only of the church team but also as an important player on the community’s team.
We wish you well in your retirement years and are happy you plan to stay in the community for a while longer.
We hope you enjoy your travels, and we look forward to seeing you out and about in the community when you return in your new role as a regular citizen.
Thanks for your service to the church and community, O’Connor.
Your retirement is well deserved.
