NATCHEZ — This year’s summer fundraising event for the Natchez Adams County Humane Society will have participants, some decked in poodle skirts and cuffs rolled up on their jeans, dancing down memory lane to music of the 1950s.

The “NACHS Sock Hop” fundraiser is coming up faster than greased lightning, starting at 6 p.m. June 27 at the Natchez Community Center on Franklin Street, said NACHS board member and fundraiser organizer Mary Ellen Eldridge.

“This is this the first fundraiser of its kind for the Humane Society that I know of,” Eldridge said. “Usually we have done a fundraiser in someone’s home, and this is my first year to organize one. I thought this would be a unique way to do it.”

The cost of attendance is $35 per person, and every dime raised will help the Humane Society continue its daily operations, including providing medical attention to animals, spaying and neutering, feeding and grooming, Eldridge said.

Fundraising can be fun, too, Eldridge said, with a lot of old-fashioned games and sweets that will transport attendees back in time.

“I thought it would be fun to take people back to a time when things moved a little slower and people weren’t always distracted by their phones,” Eldridge said. “We’ll have a hula hoop and limbo challenge, a dance-off, a costume contest for best ’50s dress, a cash prize drawing and a decadent dessert auction with some sweets made by some of the most well-known cooks in Natchez. Libations will also be provided with a cash donation.”

Eldridge said a “car of the future” would also be parked inside the community center where attendees can take snapshots of the night to remember.

“These animals have all sorts of needs … and we need people to give as much support as possible,” she said.
