NATCHEZ — Approximately 20 streets and alleyways are lined up to receive a fresh layer of asphalt this year.
The City of Natchez budgeted $180,000 this year from casino gaming revenue for street overlay projects on North Pearl Street from Madison to High Street and Jefferson to Main Street, Phipps Alley, Market Street, Palm Street from Cherry to Walnut Street, Grinnell Street from West Stiers to York Street, Magnolia Place, Old Horseshoe Lane, Weir Court, York Lane, North Wall Street from Madison Street to Main Street, Ford Street, Millette Street and an alleyway near Martin Luther King Jr. Street and North Concord Avenue.
Public Works Supervisor, Justin Dollar said the contracted company, W.E. Blain Sons Inc., is working for the state to overlay John R. Junkin Drive before starting work for the city as soon as August.
Dollar said the amount of money the city allocates for streets each year varies without a noticeable trend.
“We try to do these projects every year,” Dollar said. “The amount budgeted for it just depends on the funds we have available. Some years we’ve spent $350,000 and sometimes we’ve spent $250,000. It just varies.”
Natchez Mayor Darryl Grennell said since his administration started in 2016, the city has allocated money for street overlay each year based on the amount of funds available.
“Last year it was $200,000 and this year is almost that much,” Grennell said. “In 2016, I believe we spent about $350,000. Since my administration, this year is the lowest year, and that is just because revenues were down from the casino.”
