Toes were tapping and arms were waving from Friday evening into Sunday afternoon as weekend events attracted crowds of music fans from across the country.
The Natchez Festival of Music continued its month of music with a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. Showers moving through the area could not extinguish the enthusiasm of music fans who crowded around the stage at the Bishop Gunn Crawfish Boil on the bluffs of the Mississippi River. Sunday afternoon the Festival of Music continued with a special Mother’s Day concert at Trinity Episcopal Church.
The music concerts were good news for the community as the influx of people helped fill area hotels and restaurants. Thanks to all of the organizers and volunteers who continue to bring tourist dollars into the area.
Other good news from last week includes:
- Natchez High School senior Elon Fuery was honored by the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution with its JROTC Outstanding Cadet Award. Shocked by the award, Fuery said she plans to follow in the footsteps of her instructors and plans to enlist in the United States Air Force.
- The state’s new addition to the Mississippi Film Incentive Program seems to be having an effect on the industry in Natchez. Film producers in the area say the new law has already attracted multi-million dollar projects to the city, including a $15 million film starring Academy Award-winning actress Allison Janney, which is slated to begin filming in June. The new owner of the historic house Dunleith is also excited about the prospects the new law opens to the area. They plan to use the historic house and the former Margaret Martin School for their production efforts.
As we make our way through the last weeks of school and the first days of summer, let’s always look for the good news in the area.
