VIDALIA — A Monterey man was booked at the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office Wednesday on a grand jury indictment for a vehicular homicide charge that resulted from a fatal wreck on Easter Sunday 2018.
The accident that killed Betty Johnson, 72, of Ferriday, occurred before 3:55 p.m. on April 1, 2018, on Louisiana 568 east of Louisiana 900.
Following the accident, Louisiana State Police officials said they believe an eastbound 2015 Dodge Journey driven by Michael W. Higgins Jr., 29, crossed the center line and hit Johnson’s 2012 Chevrolet Impala head-on in the westbound lane.
Johnson was not wearing a seat belt during the collision and was pronounced dead when officials arrived, LSP officials said.
Higgins was injured and treated at Rapides Regional Trauma Center and was not immediately charged with any crime, LSP officials said.
After further investigation of the incident, Higgins was indicted by a grand jury on March 14 and is awaiting further court proceedings, Concordia Parish District Attorney Brad Burget said.
