LECOMPTE, La. — The Monterey High School Lady Wolves had an up-and-down Friday at the Rapides Tournament, first getting rolled by LHSAA Class 4A Tioga High School and then cruising past St. Joseph’s-Plaucheville.

A three-run home run by Tioga’s A. Ware in the top of the first inning set the tone for this game as the Lady Indians defeated the Monterey Lady Wolves 10-1 in a late-afternoon game.

Monterey’s only run happened in the bottom of the second inning. Tioga would go on to score three runs in the top of the fourth inning and four runs in the top of the sixth. The Lady Indians were also aided by six errors committed by the Lady Wolves.

Hannah Hitt was charged with the loss while Sarah Gray and Maddy Green each went 2-for-3 to lead the Lady Wolves at the plate.

Monterey’s second game of the day didn’t actually start until after sunset and wasn’t done until after 10 p.m. And St. Joseph’s-Plaucheville probably wished the game would have lasted just three innings instead of five innings.

The Lady Wolves’ bats came to life to the tune of 17 hits, six of which went for extra bases, as they took care of the Lady Eagles 16-2.

Andy Gray had two triples, Jessica Woodrum had two double and a triple, and Hannah Hitt had a double. Monterey also had five multiple hitters, led by Allie Lipsey’s 4-for-4 performance. Andy Gray as well as Woodrum each went 3-for-4 while Hitt and Harlie Murray each were 2-for-3.

The bottom of the first inning was huge for Monterey’s confidence as the Lady Wolves batted around and ended up scoring 10 runs. They led 11-1 before the Lady Eagles plated two runs in the top of the third inning.

Monterey answered with four runs in the bottom of the third inning and one run in the bottom of the fourth.

Avery Cupit got the win after allowing one run on one hit with six strikeouts and no walks over two-plus innings. Murray came on in relief and also gave up one run on one hit with four strikeouts.

Monterey (5-10) plays host to Vidalia High School on Monday, April 1 with the varsity game at 5:30 p.m.

Natchez High at Terry cancelled

TERRY — Natchez High School’s junior varsity and varsity softball games at MHSAA Class 6A Terry High School that were scheduled to take place Friday afternoon have been cancelled and will likely not be rescheduled with nearly two weeks left in the regular season.

Natchez High (4-2) will host Enterprise Attendance Center for a make-up game on Monday, April 1 with the JV game at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6 p.m.

Block 17, Kilbourne 5 (5 innings)

VIDALIA — Winning pitcher Twyla Smith and Kastasia O’Steen each belted three base hits to lead the Block High School Lady Bears to a 17-5 win over the Kilbourne High School Lady Hawks in five innings Friday afternoon during the Viking Classic at the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex.

Smith pitched all five innings for Block and gave up five runs on seven hits. She was tough to deal with at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles. O’Steen went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple for the Lady Bears, who had 12 total base hits.

Kilbourne did grab a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but that would be the Lady Hawks’ only lead of the game. Block (4-8) scored six runs on six hits and a few walks in the bottom of the first for a 6-1 advantage.

After each team scored one run in the second inning and none in the third inning, Kilbourne scored one run in the top of the fourth to make it a 7-3 game. The Lady Bears made sure the Lady Hawks would get no closer than that by plating seven runs on six hits and two walks in the bottom of the fourth to go up 14-3.

The Lady Hawks were hoping to keep the game going after scoring two runs in the top of the fifth to make it a 14-5 contest, but the Lady Bears would have none of it as they scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Shantise Carter went 2-for-3 for the Lady Bears. Meanwhile, the Lady Hawks didn’t have any extra-base hits and no multiple hitters.

Monterey 18, Grace Christian 2

MONTEREY — The Monterey High School Lady Wolves ended a four-game losing streak with an 18-2 win over the Grace Christian School Lady Warriors Thursday afternoon to get back to the .500 mark in LHSAA District 5-B.

Hannah Hitt got the start and allowed two runs on two hits with three strikeouts and one walk over two innings to pick up the win. Avery Cupit came on in relief and struck out one in a scoreless third inning.

Even though the Lady Wolves scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, they were only up 3-2 on Grace Christian before putting the game out of reach with eight runs in the bottom of the second for an 11-2 advantage.

Monterey (4-9, 2-2) run-ruled the Lady Warriors after plating seven runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Lady Wolves finished with 13 hits with Andy Gray leading the charge by going 3-for-3.

Sarah Gray, Maddy Green, Allie Lipsey, and Madeline Mount each went 2-for-3 with triples by Green and Mount as well as doubles by Sarah Gray and Lipsey.

Block splits doubleheader with FCCS (Thurs.)

WINNSBORO, La. — The Block High School Lady Bears were scheduled to play just one varsity game with Family Community Christian School Thursday afternoon. Instead, they ended playing a varsity doubleheader on the road against the Lady Warriors.

In the first game, Twyla Smith hit three home runs, including a grand slam, and went 4-for-4 to lead Block to a hard-fought 11-10 win over Family Community Christian School.

Joshlyn Crumpton went 3-for-3 with a home run of her own and Shantise Carter had a double for the Lady Bears.

Lady Bears head coach Barbara Savage played some of her younger players for the second game so they could get some playing time and perhaps that reflected in the outcome — FCCS 21, Block 7. No other information on the game was available.

Block went to 3-8 overall after splitting the two road games before playing in this weekend’s Viking Classic hosted by Vidalia High School.
