JACKSON — A pair of sophomore pitchers had impressive outings for Natchez High School as the Bulldogs defeated Provine High School and Murrah High School in a doubleheader Thursday at Smith-Wills Stadium.
In the first game, right-hander Zehalin Cornett allowed four earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks and helped his own cause by going 2-for-2 with three runs batted in to lead Natchez High to a 19-5 win over the Provine Rams in three and a half innings Thursday morning.
The Bulldogs were only up 3-1 on the Rams after two innings of play before exploding for 12 runs in the top of the third inning for a 15-1 advantage. The Rams tried to fight back and they scored four runs in the bottom of the third.
But Natchez High responded by plating four runs in the top of the fourth before the game was called. Paul Hargrave went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. As a team, the Bulldogs had nine hits and took advantage of 11 total walks issued by Provine pitching.
The second game belonged to left-hander Devin Winchester, who threw a no-hitter and struck out eight batters as Natchez High took care of the Murrah Mustangs 13-1 in four innings.
Winchester walked two and hit two batters over four innings of work. The only run Murrah scored off him came in the bottom of the second inning. And that was after the Bulldogs had struck for three runs in the top of the first inning and one run in the top of the second.
On the other hand, Murrah starting pitcher Braylon Gamble had a rough go of it on the mound. He allowed just four hits, but that’s because he also walked 10 batters, hit four batters, and struck out just three in his four innings.
The Bulldogs put the game away with three runs in the top of the third inning and six runs in the top of the fourth. Lionell Minor was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Hargrave and Dekaron McGruder each were 1-for-2 with two RBIs. McGruder scored two runs while Hargrave had a double and scored one run.
Natchez High (3-3) plays host to Hazlehurst High School on Monday, March 18 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. for a varsity doubleheader.
