BATON ROUGE — Jacob Spinks struck out seven batters and threw just 34 pitches as the LHSAA Class B Monterey High School Wolves pulled off a shocker Monday afternoon, defeating the Class 5A Broadmoor High School Buccaneers 11-1 in five innings.

Kerry King led Monterey at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a triple and three stolen bases. And this was the Wolves’ season opener after last Thursday’s home game against Class 3A Marksville High School was cancelled.

“This was a big win for us. I’m proud of my team,” Wolves head coach Patrick Wells said. “We’re sort of a young team. I had players step up in different roles. They’re playing strong baseball right now.”

In addition to Spinks’ incredible performance on the mound, the defense behind him committed just one error. After a scoreless first inning, Monterey took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the second inning. The Wolves scored one run in the top of the third and two more runs in the top of the fourth before Broadmoor scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth.

The Wolves run-ruled the Buccaneers after plating five runs in the top of the fifth inning and then keeping the home team off the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth.

“In our starting line-up, we have an eighth-grader, four sophomores, three juniors and one senior, and we had a freshman as our designated hitter today,” Wells said. “They’re more experienced this year.”

Monterey (1-0) will travel to Natchez to take on Adams County Christian School today at 4 p.m. The Wolves will have their home opener on Friday against Natchez High School with the varsity game at 5 p.m., followed by the junior varsity game — weather permitting.
