ALEXANDRIA, La. — Despite a six-day layoff because of game postponements for entirely different reasons, Monterey High School did not show any signs of rust as the Lady Wolves defeated the Grace Christian School Lady Warriors 34-22 Thursday night in an LHSAA District 5-B game.

Monterey and Grace Christian were supposed to play each other on Tuesday, Jan. 22, but because of too much condensation on the floor at Grace Christian’s gym resulting in numerous players slipping and falling on the court early in the varsity girls’ game, both varsity games were postponed until Thursday.

It didn’t seem to bother the Lady Wolves one bit – especially on the defensive end. They held the Lady Warriors to single-digit scoring in all four quarters. Monterey jumped out to a 7-2 lead after one quarter of play and proceeded to outscore Grace Christian 12-8 in the second quarter for a 19-10 halftime lead.

Even with Madison Calcote and Lauren Smith accounting for most of Grace Christian’s scoring, the Lady Warriors could not get over the hump in the second half. They were outscored by the Lady Wolves 11-9 in the third quarter and 4-3 in the fourth quarter.

Calcote led the Lady Warriors (6-12, 0-3) with 10 points and Smith had eight points.

Four players for Monterey scored at least five points. Andy Gray led the Lady Wolves with a game-high 11 points and Allie Lispey had seven points. Harlie Murry and Jessica Woodrum added five points each

Monterey (18-6, 1-1) hosts Grace Christian School today at 5:30 p.m.
