Please explain your position

Natchez and Adams County need an elected school board. That’s been decided in the hearts of most residents long ago.
But someone cannot let go of the status quo and is using their voice behind the scenes to stymy an effort to change the law to match the will of the people.
That person or persons needs to step out and explain their motivations — as do the state representatives who seem to be aware of the quiet opposition, but not forthcoming with information.
Both city and county boards — each currently appoints school board members — have expressed public and unanimous support for a measure to change the system of selecting school board members to be elected.
Normally, that’s all that’s needed to get a local change made in Jackson.
But last year, the measure was nixed suddenly by never leaving committee.
Earlier this week, State. Rep. Robert Johnson told a group of local business leaders that he didn’t think the measure would pass because of local opposition.
Who is opposed to the change and could that person or persons come forth and explain their stance?
The current school board has shown a disregard for the public’s desires by moving forward with a plan to build new school buildings despite the matter failing when it was taken to a vote.
That — and the backdoor lobbying against the law change — is not reflective of the public’s desire or the greater good.
We hope the matter will be discussed publicly before yet another year passes in which our state representatives fail to handle the will of the majority of Adams County residents.
