NATCHEZ — Natchez police officers are investigating several weapons officers said they recovered from a residence in the Holiday Apartments on Jan. 22, officials said.

Of the six weapons found in the residence, one was stolen and four were owned by the occupants of the residence, said Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong.

The other weapon, Armstrong said, the occupants could not verify.

“We believe a teenager there — one or both — were responsible for the stolen weapon,” Armstrong said.

No charges have yet been filed in the case, Armstrong said.

“There is an ongoing investigation,” Armstrong said. “We are trying to determine about the other weapon.”

Armstrong said investigators are back tracing the unaccounted for weapon by contacting the last known owner of the gun and finding out who it was sold to in order to determine how it ended up in the residence.

“That takes some time,” Armstrong said.

At least one of the guns, Armstrong said, would be sent to the state crime lab to determine if it was used in any crimes.

“We know that one of them (the guns),” Armstrong said, “… know one person involved in a crime was shot by a similar type weapon.”

Armstrong said the guns were recovered after officers responded to a report of a  man removing an assault rifle from under a building on Old Washington Road.

The man fled, Armstrong said, leading police on a foot chase to a wooded area, and officers said they saw him throw a silver pistol to another black male, identified as Cameron Washington.

Officers then chased Washington on foot, Armstrong said, to the Saint Catherine Creek before he evaded the officers.

Natchez Police Department detectives then visited Washington’s mother’s apartment and she told detectives several weapons were in her apartment, and she was willing to sign a consent-to-search form, Armstrong said.

Detectives, however, obtained a search warrant and retrieved multiple weapons from her residence. After retrieving the weapons, one interchangeable .22 caliber Rossi barrel had been stolen in Arkansas.

On Monday, Armstrong said, investigators made contact with Washington at the Natchez Police Department, in reference to a burglary of an automobile that occurred between Jan. 20 and 21, in which Washington was the suspect.

“Cameron Washington confessed to the burglary of an automobile, located at 328 Old Washington Road, where a .38-caliber pistol was stolen,” Armstrong said. “The stolen 38 was the pistol that Cameron Washington was seen with when evading police. The pistol has not been recovered.”

Washington was being held in the Adams County Jail on Tuesday on a charge of burglary of a motor vehicle. His bond was set at $25,000.
