Martin Luther King Day celebrations got the past week off to a great start by commemorating the late civil rights leader’s life and work.

The celebration was a great way to start the week that brought plenty of good news.

*The Natchez Historical Society held its annual meeting and presented its Preservation Award to Mary Eidt for her contributions to numerous publications about Natchez history.

Congratulations, Mary Eidt, and thanks for the contributions to recording and preserving the city’s history.

*Historic Oak Hill Inn, one of Natchez’s Bed and Breakfast establishments, earned a Traveler’s Choice Award based on customer reviews.

The award was no one-time fluke, either, as this is the sixth time Oak Hill Inn has earned the award from Traveler’s Choice for its excellence in customer service.

*Natchez’s community swimming pool may be closed for the winter, but aquatics director Monica Bihm has been hard at work not only keeping the pool clean but also planning for the spring opening.

She also recently announced plans for an 11 a.m. Feb. 16 Polar Bear Plunge fundraising event for the pool.

That could be a fun event for all the brave polar bear wannabes out there, so mark you calendars.

*YMCA of Natchez has named Faye Minor program/sports director. Minor is no stranger to Natchez not only having grown up here but also having managed the Boys and Girls Club from 2000 to 2012.

Minor brings a wealth of experience and education to the YMCA, and we are confident she will do a great job heading up that program.
