Just like the old adage “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” one man’s surplus is another’s meager sustenance.

The good people who lead the Natchez Stewpot have blessed our community for many, many years by offering hot meals every day to the poor, the elderly and anyone who has a need.

This week, we learned through an annual update of the organization some amazing statistics.

Last year the Stewpot served 108,000 meals or approximately 300 per day.

That in itself is amazing.

But that they did so by spending only $106,000 — or less than $1 per meal — is a testament to the solid, frugal leadership there.

The Stewpot has managed to do all of that through the kindness and donations of the Natchez area. From outright cash donations, to volunteer labor to food drives, the Stewpot has many friends in the community that help.

Lately a new blessing has fallen on the Stewpot — milk.

Through a government program that purchases surplus milk to keep the domestic price stable, the Stewpot has been able to provide free milk to those in need. The milk, Stewpot organizers say, will be handed out as long as it is made available to them.

Natchez is blessed to have this group of people who love people and provide the basic necessities of life.
