NATCHEZ — School bus drivers responsible for transporting Natchez public school children say they may not be driving their buses on Wednesday, the first day of school.

Though no drivers wanted to be quoted, several said they are planning to strike to protest the fact that they did not receive pay raises and incentives they say were promised.

More than 50 of the drivers — employed by Durham School Services — met with Durham and school officials Monday to discuss the situation.

Durham is a private company contracted by the Natchez-Adams School District to handle bus services. Bus drivers are paid by Durham, not the school district.

Carrie Hunt, organizer of the bus drivers group, said Monday’s meeting concluded without a decision.

Other drivers leaving the meeting seemed under the impression that they would not be receiving the raises they requested.

“We don’t know what we are going to do,” Hunt said. “We are waiting on them.”

Officials from Durham and the school declined to comment.
