NATCHEZ — Cathedral High School’s varsity boys’ soccer team played better on Monday night against St. Aloysius than it did just over a month ago, but the Flashes still comfortably prevailed in a 9-1 win over the Green Wave.

Neither team scored until defending MAIS Division III state champion St. Aloysius broke through in the 29th minute. However, Cathedral answered with a goal by Ty Bertelsen in the 32nd minute to tie the match at 1-1.

The Flashes scored two goals after that to take a 3-1 halftime lead. Green Wave head coach Dennis Hogue said that St. Al’s second goal was “on a smokin’ shot” and described its third goal as somewhat fluky, adding, “no one expected that.”

St. Aloysius took over in the second half, taking advantage of bad defense and a change at goalkeeper by Cathedral after its starter had to leave the match due to an injury to end up scoring six goals.

“We got some miscommunication (on defense). They passed the ball well and got more scoring opportunities,” Hogue said. “Donovan Deer played the first half and the first 18 minutes of the second half. He took a shot and jammed his finger. Colby Costa took his place and played the final 27 minutes.”

Deer allowed five goals, but made 18 saves that kept the game from being even more lopsided. Costa allowed four goals and made seven saves.
“All things considered, it was a good match. We improved against them. They’re the toughest team we play all year,” Hogue said. “They’re the defending champs and it’s obvious why. They’re a good team.”

Cathedral (1-3) begins MAIS Division III South, District 4 play Thursday when it plays at Brookhaven Academy at 5:30 p.m.

ACCS 4, Porter’s Chapel Academy 0

VICKSBURG — Four different players scored goals for Adams County Christian School as the Rebels defeated the Porter’s Chapel Academy Eagles 4-0 Monday night in an MAIS Division III South, District 4 match.

Nolan Owens got the scoring started with a goal in the 6th minute, followed by goals by Jake Britt in the 14th minute and Tripp Cotten in the 30th minute to give ACCS a 3-0 lead at intermission.

“The guys came out communicating, trapping, and passing,” ACCS head coach Jimmy Allgood said. “They came out (ready to play) and I’m really proud of them.”

Aaron ‘White Lightning’ Newman capped off the shutout win with a goal in the 55th minute. Rebels goalkeeper Cody Brown finished with six saves.

“Defensively, guys played lockdown. We had some new faces and they stepped up,” Allgood said. “Defense is what led to our goals. We had approximately 20 shots on goal this evening.”

ACCS was scheduled to play at Central Private School Wednesday afternoon, but that has been rescheduled to sometime after the Christmas break. The Rebels will host the ACCS Christmas Shootout this Saturday — weather permitting.
