PICAYUNE — The Natchez High School Lady Bulldogs came up just short in their attempt to win the girls’ championship of the Picayune High School Thanksgiving Tournament as they lost to the host Picayune Lady Maroon Tide 33-32 last Tuesday afternoon.
Natchez High led Picayune 10-7 after one quarter of play. Both teams scored eight points in the second quarter, giving the Lady Bulldogs an 18-15 halftime lead. However, the Lady Maroon Tide’s defense took over in the third quarter and its offense did just enough to allow them to outscore the Lady Bulldogs 6-3 to make it a 21-21 game heading into the fourth quarter.
Each team kind of regained their offensive rhythm in the final eight minutes, but Picayune outscored Natchez High 12-11 to take the win.
Aja Carter and Candi Gray led the Lady Bulldogs with eight points each while Kelvonda Arbuthnot made the all-tournament team. Camille Culpepper led the Lady Maroon Tide with a game-high 11 points and Deniyah Freeman added eight points.
Natchez High (2-2) next plays at Vidalia High School at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
