VIDALIA — The Vidalia High School Vikings saw their season come to a bitter end Friday night as they lost to the Many High School Tigers 35-0 at Dee Faircloth Viking Stadium in the quarterfinals of the LHSAA Class 2A State Playoffs.
Many scored two touchdowns in a span of about a minute at the midway point of the first quarter to take a 14-0 lead. The No. 1 seed Tigers added another touchdown near the end of the quarter for a 21-0 lead.
The Tigers scored again with about 7 minutes to go in the second quarter and took a 28-0 advantage into halftime. They scored their fifth and final touchdown of the game with nearly 6 minutes remaining in the third quarter for a 35-0 lead.
No. 8 seed Vidalia had its best opportunity to avoid the shutout early in the fourth quarter as it had the ball at the Many 1-yard line. But four plays netted minus-2 yards and the Vikings would turn the ball over on downs.
And Vidalia’s inability to run the ball on Many’s defense was one of the stories of the game. As a team, the Vikings had just 18 total rushing yards. Another was turnovers. Tristan Weatherly threw two interceptions and the Vikings lost a fumble.
Weatherly ended up throwing 44 passes on the night, completing 17 of them for 220 yards. Jared Simpson had four receptions for 67 yards and DeMikal McCoy had three catches for 56 yards.
The only real bright spots for Vidalia were that it had 14 first downs and was penalized just one time for five yards.
All five of the Tigers’ touchdowns were of the rushing variety. They only completed one pass and didn’t throw the ball that much.
Many (12-1) will host No. 5 seed Welsh High School in the Class 2A semifinals next Friday night.
Welsh took care of No. 20 seed DeQuincy High School on the road 41-0.
Vidalia, the runner-up in District 2-2A, finished its season with a 9-4 overall record.
