LHSAA roundup: Vidalia QB leads 40-14 win over Mangham

MANGHAM, La. — Vidalia High School senior quarterback Tristan Weatherly had a game to remember as he threw for 442 yards and five touchdowns as the Vikings overcame a sloppy first half to defeat the Mangham High School Dragons 40-14 Friday night in an LHSAA District 2-2A game.

“We kind of messed round in the first half. They played us tough in the first half,” Vidalia head coach Dee Faircloth said. “It’s what we expected from Mangham. They have some tough guys.”

Two turnovers, including an interception by Weatherly, kept the Dragons in the game longer than perhaps expected. Devin Green scored on a one-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter and Weatherly connected with Jared Simpson on a 94-yard touchdown catch-and-run early in the second quarter.

But Mangham (2-7, 1-5) scored first on a rushing touchdown less than a minute into the game and tied the game at 14-14 with about 2:00 to go until halftime.

“It was a tough ball game. We knew it was going to be a tough game,” Faircloth said. “We woke up (in the second half) and played like we’re supposed to. The defense came back and played like they’re supposed to.”

The defense pitched a shutout after the break and Weatherly went to work, throwing touchdown passes of five and 90 yards to Simpson, 22 yards to DeMikal McCoy, and 24 yards to Green. The win ended a two-game losing streak for Vidalia.

Weatherly ended up completing 26 of 41 passes for the night. Simpson had seven receptions for 213 yards and three touchdowns. McCoy had 10 catches for 107 yards and one score while Devonte Loyd had six catches for 70 yards.

In addition to his touchdown reception, Green led the team in rushing with 10 carries for 52 yards. Cam’ron Randall had 25 rushing yards on seven carries.

“Our offense is ranked second in the state (in Class 2A), maybe even first after Friday night,” Faircloth said.

Vidalia (6-3, 4-1) hosts Delhi Charter School in a key District 2-2A game Friday at 7 p.m.

Cedar Creek 41, Delta Charter 20

RUSTON, La. — Cedar Creek School scored 21 points in a span of about seven minutes in the first quarter as the Cougars defeated the Delta Charter School Storm 41-20 Friday night in an LHSAA District 2-1A game.

Looking to bounce back from a demoralizing loss at Sicily Island High School one week earlier, Cedar Creek (5-5, 2-4) dominated a Delta Charter team that was looking for a much-needed win.

At least the Cougars did so in the first half on their way to a 27-6 halftime advantage. The Storm scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and actually outscored the Cougars 14-13 in the second half. But the 21-point deficit was too much for Delta Charter to overcome.

Delta Charter (2-7, 1-5) will look to end its regular season on a positive note with a victory, but it will not be easy as the Storm will travel to Monroe, La. to take on Ouachita Christian School Friday at 7 p.m.

Oak Grove 48, Sicily Island 26

OAK GROVE, La. — The good news for the Sicily Island High School Tigers was that they scored 26 points on one of the top teams in LHSAA Class 1A in Oak Grove High School.

The bad news was the defense couldn’t stop the host Tigers’ offense enough to pull off the upset as Oak Grove defeated Sicily Island 48-26 Friday night to remain undefeated overall and in District 2-1A.

The first quarter went back and forth and ended with Oak Grove (9-0, 6-0) leading 14-7. The host Tigers swung the momentum in their favor in the second quarter as they scored three touchdowns while the visiting Tigers scored just once to make it a 34-14 game at the half.

Oak Grove carried that momentum into the third quarter as it scored another 14 points. Sicily Island scored six points and trailed 48-20 at the end of the quarter. A touchdown by the visiting Tigers was the only scoring in the fourth quarter.

Sicily Island (4-5, 2-4) will try to finish at .500 for the regular season when it hosts Tensas High School at 7 p.m. Friday.

Arcadia 51, Block 8

JONESVILLE — The worst season in recent memory for Block High School football continued Friday night as the Bears were routed by the Arcadia High School Hornets 51-8 Friday night in a non-district game.

Arcadia scored 16 points on two touchdowns and two two-point conversions in the first quarter. The Hornets had their way with Block in the second quarter in all three phases and scored 29 points to take a 45-0 lead into halftime.

The second half was a lot more competitive as the Bears scored on a touchdown and two-point conversion. And their defense held Arcadia (3-5) to just one touchdown.

Block (0-9) returns to LHSAA District 3-1A action Friday night in the regular-season finale when it hosts LaSalle High School.
