No place for killers in civil society

Wrapping our heads around the violent mindset of the people who have terrorized parts of our community over the last year with a series of retaliatory shooting is difficult.
From a shooting spree throughout parts of the city in October 2017 to last weekend’s latest killing, the murder and mayhem caused by rival neighborhood gangs trying to get back at one another would be ridiculous if their petty disputes were not so deadly.
What on earth could cause teens and young adults to pull high-powered firearms and ride through the streets shooting — sometimes indiscriminately?
What burning desire to prove oneself right in a feud could lead to taking another’s life? It’s impossible for law-abiding, God-fearing people to comprehend what leads to this.
But what we know is that the crimes have occurred and, thankfully, through the cooperation and “all hands on deck” approach of local law enforcement agencies, suspects have been found.
What’s needed now is for the prosecutorial wing of our justice system to take the lead and provide an aggressive prosecution.
If the suspects are found guilty, we hope and pray the local judges will sentence them to the fullest extent possible.
Anyone who willfully pulls a gun and fires at random through the streets of a neighborhood has shown a flagrant disregard for human life and likely needs to lose the right to walk freely in our community.
