As each inning went by, the chances for Adams County Christian School to register a hit became slimmer and slimmer.

Lady Rebels coach Tate Lipscomb was practically begging his players Tuesday night to do anything they could to simply hit the ball.

“We have to make an adjustment to the pitcher quicker,” he said. “We can’t wait till the third time through the lineup. It’s too late by then.”

Geri Brumfield settled the team down in the top of the sixth inning after registering the Lady Rebels’ first hit of the night. Her strong smack to the left field fence created enough spark to trickle into the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough as ACCS fell to Brookhaven Academy, 5-2.

“That’s a good team — a really good team,” Lipscomb said. “And, a good pitcher. No hits would not be a good feeling, but it’s really all about adjustment.

“We can’t get a rhythm. The problem is once we start hitting the ball, we cannot carry that momentum over into the next game because the next pitcher is completely different.”

To fix the trouble on offense, which Lipscomb said is not a sudden issue, his team must approach the plate with a purpose.

“A lot of them go up to the batter’s box without one,” he said. “They go up there hoping, and they just start swinging at anything.

“They have got to go up there and take their pitch. If they see it go by and it’s not what they want, they have to just let it go. The have to go up there wanting their pitch, and their pitch only.”

Despite the loss, Lipscomb said he did see improvement from previous games as ACCS (1-8, 0-2) sits with just one win this season.

“Tonight was a lot better,” he said. “That was one of the best games we played. We got beat by a good team.”

If nothing else, Lipscomb said he was also pleased with the Lady Rebels’ effort to record outs.

Highlighting the night was a double play to end the top of the third inning. Third baseman Shelby Mason launched a throw to first base while Carly Delaney then tossed it to Makenna Patt at home plate for the second out.

“We played great defense tonight. It was pretty flawless,” Lipscomb said.

Marlee Magee had the only other hit for ACCS besides Brumfield with a leadoff single in the top of the seventh inning. Becca Cowan pitched all seven innings to take the loss.

The Lady Rebels will be back in action Thursday when they host Franklin Academy for a varsity doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m.
