NEW AUGUSTA, Miss. (AP) — A south Mississippi town is trying to persuade someone to open a grocery store there after its previous supermarket closed in 2016.

New Augusta officials tell WDAM-TV that they’ve invited multiple grocers to open a store, but none have replied.

The nearest grocery store to the 650-resident town is 7 miles away in Beaumont.

Bonnie Dunaway, a 96-year-old resident of New Augusta, says she’s lucky to still be driving. But she says others who can’t drive face obstacles getting to a store.

Resident Scotty Deiley says driving the 14 miles round trip “to take an onion to grandma” is detrimental.
