NATCHEZ — Natchez City Clerk Megan Edmonds said her resignation announced Wednesday did not come easy, but that ultimately her family played a factor in the decision.

“My mother and I own a business in town,” Edmonds said. “An opportunity came up for her that would have me running the business more often and having to be all hands on deck there.”

Edmonds said the decision did not come easy because she has worked with a lot of wonderful people. However, she said it was the best move for her and her family.

“When Megan was moved to interim city clerk, she stepped up to the plate and kept everything afloat,” said Natchez Mayor Darryl Grennell. “That’s why we promoted her to the official city clerk position. She has done a very good job during her time in the position. Always dependable. I’m sad to see her go.”

Although Edmonds submitted her resignation, she has no official last day yet. Edmonds said that date is dependent on when the city’s budget gets approved and when the city hires her replacement.

“I will remain with the city to ensure the budget gets completed,” Edmonds said. “We came to an agreement that I would stay through the process.

“My end date also depends on when they find a replacement for me. However, I told (the Natchez Board of Aldermen) that if they need anything from me, I’ll be happy to help. If I need to help train the new city clerk, I’ll be glad to. We made a lot of progress while I was in this position. I don’t want to see that progress backslide. I put in a lot of blood, sweat and tears. I take a lot pride in my work. I want the progress made to continue to move forward.”

The city’s budget should be approved in mid-September.

Edmonds first started as a city accountant in November 2016. She was later moved to interim city clerk in November 2017, then later promoted to city clerk in December 2017.

“This is an exciting new opportunity for me,” Edmonds said. “I’m going to miss everyone I worked with here. It just came down to loyalty, and I have to be loyal to my family.”
