The Vidalia Little League Softball 16U all-star team is now just one win away from repeating as Senior League Southwestern Regional champions.
Vidalia won two games Tuesday to advance to the title game at 7 p.m. today in Vidalia.
The all-stars first shut out the Louisiana team, 19-0. They then defeated New Mexico, 16-2.
“It was total domination,” Vidalia coach Tate Lipscomb said. “We finally came alive and hit the ball. We played great defense, too.”
Jensen Gremillion pitched both games, a total of nine innings, and recorded 11 strikeouts total. Shelby Mason came in to record the final out of the day to seal the win.
Gremillion pitched a no-hitter in the first game with just two walks.
“She pitched very well. She came out throwing strikes and was on fire,” Lipscomb said.
Shelbi Cross highlighted the first win of the day for Vidalia batting 3-for-3 with a double and an over-the-fence home run.
Lipscomb said Vidalia was leading 18-0 in the fourth inning when Cross put the icing on the cake.
“First home run I’ve ever seen hit out that park. She just hit a bomb,” he said. “She thought it was a pop fly and was jogging to first base. She rounded second and then she realized.”
Others with multiple hits in Vidalia’s first-game win were Savanna Spear, batting 3-for-3 with a double, Mason and Makenna Patt, batting 2-for-4 and Geri Brumfield, batting 2-for-3. Gremillion and Alyssa Howard had a double and Tiffany Brewer had a triple.
Mason and Gremillion both batted 3-for-4 in the second win, while Spear was 2-for-3. Cross and Alyssa Cupstid both had a double.
Vidalia will play Texas West for the championship today. Texas West defeated Vidalia in the first game of the tournament, 10-0, but Lipscomb said he isn’t scared.
“I get my rematch,” he said. “I have complete confidence we can play our game.
“The nerves got to us in the first game of the tournament. We hadn’t played an all-star game yet and it got to them. My girls are playing the game we are supposed to play now. I’m ready for it.”
At stakes is a spot in the Senior League World Series in Deleware to compete against other regional tournament winners across the country.
“We better have the entire town of Natchez and Vidalia there,” Lipscomb said.
