WATERPROOF — A Waterproof teenager was airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson after a farming accident Saturday afternoon.
Justin Hubbard, 18, suffered severe leg injuries to both of his legs after becoming trapped in the head of a combine at Davis Farms south of Waterproof at about 1 p.m. Saturday, Tensas Parish Sheriff Rickey Jones said.
“We’re not certain how exactly this happened,” Jones said. “We don’t know if he slipped or some loose clothes pulled him down into it, but both legs were trapped.”
Jones said Hubbard was working on the combine that was fitted with corn head when the accident occurred. A corn head is an attachment that aids in the harvesting of corn.
“He was there working with his grandfather,” Jones said. “They may have servicing the combine to start working. There were several people around.”
Northeast Louisiana Ambulance Service, the Tensas Parish Fire District first responders and the Tensas Sheriff’s Department responded to the 911 call.
When first responders arrived, Hubbard was conscious and alert, Jones said. The Jaws of Life had to be used to extricate Hubbard from the piece of equipment.
Hubbard was taken to Riverland Medical Center in Ferriday before being transported to Jackson by helicopter.
“It is possible that he will have to lose part of one leg, but they think they can save the other one,” Jones said. “It was very tragic, but could have been worse.”
Hubbard’s exact condition was unknown.
