NEW ORLEANS — The Vidalia 19U Purple Sox Dixie Boys all-stars fell to JPRD East Tuesday, ultimately giving up the state title with an 8-1 loss.
The Purple Sox jumped out to score one run in the top of the first inning, but quickly fell behind after their opponent scored five in the bottom of the inning.
“We had what it took but we ran into trouble throwing strikes,” coach Greg Naquin said.
Drake Smith got the start for Vidalia, and Jace Watts was credited with the loss. Peyton Fort finished the game pitching the last three innings.
The Purple Sox pitchers combined to total eight walks and three batters hit by a pitch.
Naquin said his team also struggled at the plate, though it tallied six hits.
“We once again left several runners on base, especially in scoring position.”
Trenton Miller led the offense going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Josh Day was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
“I’m still proud of these guys for being state runner up,” Naquin said. “This is the highest place that I’ve ever coached a team since I took over the league.
“I still believe we were the best team, but baseball is execution driven.”
