NATCHEZ — One woman was found dead after Natchez firefighters responded to a house fire early Saturday morning on North Palestine Road.
Crews from two city fire stations and the Foster Mound Road Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire shortly after 4:30 a.m., Natchez Fire Department Capt. David Freeman said.
Adams County Coroner James Lee was called to the scene when the body of an unidentified woman was found in the house.
Lee said he arrived at the scene at approximately 7:30 a.m. as firefighters were still putting out hot spots.
Lee said he is unable to identify with any certainty the woman who was found in one of the house’s bedrooms. Lee also said the remains of two animals were also found in the house.
An autopsy of the body will be performed for identification and cause of death, Lee said.
Freeman said they believe the deceased was the only person in the house at the time of the fire.
“Given the time of day and the vehicle (in the) driveway, it appears that there was only one person,” Freeman said. “We did a search as standard procedure.”
The house was part of a larger piece of property and was located in the woods behind a larger house on North Palestine Road.
At 8 a.m., the site of the fire and surrounding woods was being cordoned off as a crime scene.
Adams County Fire Investigator Darryl Smith said the state fire marshal has been called and that he could release no more information about the fire until the investigation is complete.
