NATCHEZ — Lights. Camera. Pets. Whether people want to adopt a new pet or simply want to donate to their care — they can do both this Saturday and feel like a charitable celebrity.
In the “Dog Days of Summer” event, the Humane Society is taking some of their adoptable dogs and kittens for an outing from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Memorial Park in Downtown Natchez.
Later Saturday evening, volunteers and board members will be dressing up for a celebrity party fundraiser at the lake house of Pat and Connie Burns from 6 to 8 p.m. at 5055 Louisiana 568 in Ferriday.
Dog Days of Summer
NACHS shelter manager Lena McKnight said attendees are welcome to come to Memorial Park and just walk and pet their furry friends, and all of the animals will be prepped and ready to take home should someone want to adopt them.
McKnight said every adoptable orphan is vaccinated, dewormed, fixed and micro-chipped before they are given to a new home.
“We invite people to come out,” she said. “We have great dogs and cats that have been vaccinated and dewormed and are ready for a good home.”
McKnight said NACHS is selling raffle tickets at the event for a new Cub Cadet Challenger 700 vehicle, which will be drawn for July 31. Tickets cost $20 for one or $50 for three, she said.
McKnight said the shelter is completely full of adoptable friends. People have come to the shelter regularly with animals that need rescuing and had to be turned away, she said.
“Right now we have some specials going on because we are completely full on big dogs. We’ve reduced our adoption fees from $75 to $50 for dogs and from $50 to $35 for kittens.”
Celebrity Party Fundraiser
For a $35 donation to NACHS, attendees can walk the red carpet by Lake St. John as their favorite celebrity as part of the shelter’s annual summer fundraiser, though dressing up is not required.
A cash bar, food and beverage and a movie-themed popcorn and candy bar are included with the donation.
Susan Callon, a NACHS board member, said volunteers at the Burnses’ lake house would be dressed as celebrities, bartenders and paparazzi while pictures are captured at the party. Attendees can also compete for best actor, best actress, best director and best costume hair and makeup awards.
Callon said the event also includes silent and live actions while volunteers at the bar compete for who can raise the most money and tips — and all proceeds will benefit the animal shelter.
