Aldermen to tackle visitor center, Margaret Martin Performing Arts Center

NATCHEZ — The Natchez Visitor Reception Center’s ownership, a potential downtown development director and the state of the Margaret Martin Performing Arts Center are a few highlights of Tuesday’s upcoming Natchez Board of Aldermen meeting.
The agenda for the 11 a.m. meeting at the City Council Chambers, 115 S. Pearl St., lists these items as business the city will handle Tuesday.
Specifically, the aldermen will discuss transferring ownership of the visitor center to the National Park Service. Last month, officials reported that the transfer was “full speed ahead,” after many months of the city striving toward that goal. The visitor center in recent years has seen its state funding depleted, putting the city in a predicament. By transferring ownership to the NPS, officials want to, as Natchez National Historical Park Superintendent Kathleen Bond said next month, “re-envision” what the center can provide for visitors.
The city will also consider approving a job description for a downtown development director, whose task would be to oversee the economic development of downtown Natchez. Mayor Darryl Grennell and City Planner Rico Giani recently laid out their plan to downtown merchants for the future of that area, which all begins with hiring a director.
Another discussion — though one that only has three minutes set aside according to the meeting’s agenda — will surround the state of Margaret Martin’s plumbing and electrical systems. Tenants of the building are scheduled to go before the aldermen on that matter.
Other items up for discussion on Tuesday’s agenda include:
- Authorizing a “Mobile Food Service” ordinance to establish guidelines for food trucks
- An appraisal of the Broadway Street parking lot currently owned by members of the Callon family and that the city aims to potentially purchase
- An update on city health insurance
- An update on Natchez Housing Authority programs
