We need to respect laws, each other

Less than halfway through 2018, the number of homicides in our community nearly rivals some previous full-year statistics.

Murder is a difficult thing for law enforcement officers to prevent.

Looking into the heart of a person and determining what that person is capable of doing is impossible for law enforcement officers.

But often, warning signs of problems appear to those around the perpetrator well before the decision to kill someone is made.

All too often, we simply look the other way or justify away a worrisome behavior.

We don’t respect one another to get involved to prevent tragedy.

We live in a society that by and large lacks respect for one another. Collectively, we treat each other horribly. Such disrespect and tolerance of violence permeates our nation and community. From video games depicting life-like killings to celebrities and national leaders who exhibit atrocious behavior, the examples of what not to do are everywhere.

For this to improve and be curbed, we must collectively begin to say, “Enough,” and demand respect — respect of our laws and of each other.

If you see something suspicious — whether in your neighborhood or in your family or work circles — call law enforcement to check things out.

With a common, concerted effort we can find a way to an improved, safer community, but it takes respect and a willingness to get involved.
