NATCHEZ — Adams County plans to request that part of the Old Washington School on U.S. 61 be set aside for a potential fire station.

The county will write a letter to the Natchez-Adams School District to ask that part of the property, which officials have discussed turning into a public park, be given to the county.

“When I read in the newspaper that they were thinking about giving away the Washington School District property to (the Mississippi Department of) Archives and History — I want this board to send the school district a letter and see can they carve out a piece of that property for the county, just in case we want to put a fire station out there,” District 2 Supervisor Ricky Gray said.

District 1 Supervisor Mike Lazarus said the county would need only 1 acre or so.

Supervisors voted unanimously to notify the NASD of their intent.

The possibility of turning the property into a park came back in May, when Natchez Mayor Darryl Grennell asked the school board to consider donating the Old Washington School to MDAH. While restoring the property would be expensive, Grennell said, giving it to MDAH and turning it into a park for the citizens would be a feasible alternative.

School board and city officials agreed to form a joint committee to decide the fate of the property, which still remains to be seen.
