NATCHEZ — Emma Hogue and Marty Lewis teamed up as a girls doubles team for the first time since being teammates at Cathedral School in 2017 during the 39th Annual Nathcez Community Cancer Tennis Tournament on Sunday at Duncan Park.

Yet, Hogue and Lewis weren’t the only partners they played with during the three-day event. They also teamed up with their dads — Dennis Hogue and Todd Lewis — and competed in the mixed doubles portion of the compeition.

“It was fun,” Hogue said of playing with her dad, Dennis. “It was fun for me because my dad always coached me in soccer and my mom is the tennis player in the family. So it was fun to mix it up a bit.”

Throughout the event, there were numerous father-daughter mixed doubles teams competiting. Noreen Pyron, who is the director of the event, said the number of father-daughter pairs along with other family teams just shows how much tennis is a family affair in Natchez.

Although it was fun pairing up with their dads, there was some butting of the heads. Yet the two players and their dads set ground rules to avoid that as much as possible.

“We both told our dads that we shouldn’t coach one another,” Lewis said. “To avoid getting mad at one another.”

Even though winning matches with their dads was one of the major highlights of the tournament for Hogue and Lewis, being able to be the better player was also up there.

Hogue’s father is the better soccer player of the two while Lewis’ dad taught her everything about softball and never really played tennis before. So throughout the weekend, they were able to show up their dads.

“My dad double vaulted three times in a row,” Hogue said with a chuckle.

The biggest highlight, however, for Hogue and Lewis was making memories that they can cheerish forever with their dads. And their fathers couldn’t agree more.

“It’s awesome,” Dennis Hogue said. “I appreciate it more than she does, I think. It’s a special for me. It made me somewhat emotional.

“We will be looking back at this one day and tell each other this was such a fun time. There’s nothing like making memories. So, I love it.”

Hogue and Lewis have partnered with or played against their dads in tennis before the tournament this weekend. However, this was the first time they paired with their fathers in a competitive setting. And they said look foreward to playing with them in the future.

“I’ll definitely do this next year with him,” Lewis said.

Before Hogue and Lewis pair with their dads again, they will also want to revive the days when they were a state championship doubles team for Cathedral.

“It was fun to relive the glory days,” Lewis said.
