Citizens academy a worthy effort

With a few certificates and a slice or two of cake, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office celebrated the completion of its new citizens academy.
But the goal for the sheriff’s office is much greater than simply a photo op and a reason to have a slice of cake. The goal is to educate.
Sadly, many in our community simply do not fully trust law enforcement.
Over the years that distrust has manifested itself in frustrated investigators who know a crime occurred, know someone was there, but cannot find anyone to tell them what occurred.
When such happens the criminal element in our community wins.
The recent conclusion of the citizens academy is a success if some of the participants came away with a newfound knowledge of and appreciation for law enforcement.
Criminal investigators and prosecutors cannot make cases, arrests and convictions without help from others.
Rarely can a criminal matter result in justice without the help and cooperation of witnesses or involved parties.
If the academy changes even one attitude that ultimately winds up aiding law enforcement, the entire effort, from classroom work to the celebratory cake, will be worth the effort.
