Herman was born Aug. 8, 1952, in Natchez, the son of Charlie Rice and Carrie Burr.

At the age of 18, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served his country for more than 20 years. During that time, he and his family traveled across the world and met many friends along the way.

Herman retired from the military and settled in San Antonio. Soon after, he relocated and spent most of his remaining years in his beloved home of Natchez. Anyone who knew Herman, knew his sincerity, kindness, his love for the San Antonio Spurs and his love of cooking and gardening. There was not a plant or vegetable he could not grow and a dish he could not prepare.

For the last five months of his life, Herman relocated to Austin, where he resided with his daughter, Delisha, and son-in-law, Clarence McLain. He enjoyed being back in Texas, especially relaxing with his two fur friends, Kiwi and Marshmallow. He never forgot his many family members and friends back home in Natchez.

Herman’s family is at peace knowing he is reunited with his parents; his daughter, LaTess Nural; his brother, Willie; and other beloved family and friends.

Survivors include his dear children, Delisha McLain and husband, Clarence, and Herman “Alvin” Stewart Jr.; one granddaughter, Gwendolyn Marie Stewart; and countless family and friends.

He will be missed immensely.

“My mind knows you are in a better place, where there is no pain. You are at peace. I understand that, I just wish I could explain that to my heart.” — Michelle Russell
