NATCHEZ — Noon Saturday is the deadline to register to vote in Adams County for June 5 party primary elections for candidates for U.S. Senator and the U.S. Congress.

Adams County Circuit Clerk Eddie Walker said registration is available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the circuit clerk’s office at 115 S. Wall St. and will close at noon Saturday.

Voters only need to register if they have never registered before, changed addresses after their last registration, had a name change after their last registration or have not actively voted in at least one general election in four years.

All voters must be 18 years old or older.

“If you are 17 years old but will be 18 before Nov. 6, you are eligible to register,” Walker said.

He said the county has 19 precincts and the names on the ballots for each precinct are the same.

Voters must select which party — Democrat or Republican — they identify with while at the polls voting in the June 5 primaries to fill outgoing U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper’s seat and for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Roger Wicker. The U.S. Senate seat recently vacated by the retirement of Sen. Thad Cochran will not be a partisan race, thus will not be involved in the primaries. That race’s candidates will first appear on the November general election ballot.

Once voters have voted in the primaries, Walker said, they can’t change parties throughout the primary season, for instance if there were a runoff in a race the other party.

The names of those running for either U.S. Senate or U.S. Congress will appear on a single ballot per party.

Walker said politicians running as Republican will not appear on the Democratic ballot or vice-versa.

He said all eligible citizens should register and vote and that ballots can be mailed to any out-of-town college or university students.

“This is our voice in government,” Walker said. “In my opinion, if you do not vote you have no right to complain. If you do, you have every right.”
