NATCHEZ — Pamper Me Please, a popular full-service day spa, and Uptown Grocery, a local deli, both recently announced they will be closing their doors soon, and one new business, St. Andrews Thrift store, has announced it will soon be opening doors again in Natchez.

Pamper Me Please, has been operating in Natchez for approximately 20 year, the past 17 of which have been in its current location at 151 E. Franklin St., Natchez.

Owner Alice Shupe said business has been fine recently but that she is just ready to semi retire so the spa will close on May 31.

“My daughter, Tammy Summers, was in business with me before, but she moved away,” Shupe said, adding the business was too much for her to handle by herself.

The spa has two hair stylists, three massage therapists and three other employees offering massage therapy, holistic products, detox programs, facials, manicures, pedicures and gifts.

Shupe said she plans to continue working part-time from her home doing facials.

Uptown Grocery, a deli and catering service that has been operating at 531 S. Canal St. since 2006 offering chicken salad, deli meats, sandwiches, pizza, gourmet desserts and catering, will close at the end of the day Saturday.

“We love the people who patronized us,” said Richard “Dick” Walcott, owner. “There just weren’t enough of them.”

Walcott said he believes Natchez’s dwindling population and incomes contributed to the lack of business in recent months.

“We appreciate the people interested and who patronized us,” he said, “and a lot of people said they are sorry to see us go, but they didn’t patronize us. We’ll miss them, and they’ll miss us.”

He complimented his staff of two fulltime employees and one part timer.

“We have great employees,” Walcott said. “Currently, we have a small staff and they are really good. We wish we could find a place to take them. We hope someone can find room to pick them up. They are good with the public and us.”

Matt Codding of St. Andrews Thrift Store announced Thursday the second-hand retail store will open a new location in Natchez on Tuesday at 433 Suite A, U.S. 61.

He said the company, which is headquartered in McComb, operates secondhand stores throughout the state and takes donations.

The company is part of the Methodist Conference and previously had a location in Natchez that he said closed approximately five years ago.
