Natchez — Services for Essie Mae Hooker Granger, 65, of Natchez, who died
Saturday, April 21, 2018, in Baton Rouge, will be on 11 a.m. Saturday at New Beginnings Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Leroy White officiating.
Burial will follow at the Sunset View Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of West Gate Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 5 to 6 p.m. today with a celebration of life wake service at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.
Essie was born on Feb. 15, 1953, in Natchez, the daughter of Eddie Hooker Sr. and Essie Carter. She was a 1971 graduate of North Natchez High School and a graduate of Copiah-Lincoln Community College, receiving an associate degree. Ms. Granger was a member of New Beginnings Baptist Church and the Eastern Star.
Essie was retired from Natchez-Adams School District and Walmart. She was a proud supporter of the Natchez High Bulldogs and Dynamic Dancing Jewels. Essie enjoyed cooking, traveling, shooting pool and spending time with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Maggie Hall and Shirley Battieste; one brother, Dennis Hooker; one grandson, Darrius Hooker; grandmothers, Dora Hall and Mattie Dawson; two uncles, Charlie and Joe Hooker; and special friend, Linda Floyd.
Survivors include one son, Kelvin Hooker Sr.; two daughters, Carla Carroll and Sherika McDonald and husband, Carl; stepmother, Ida Hooker; two brothers, Eddie Hooker Jr. and Dunk Hall; one sister, Lynda Faye Hall; seven grandchildren, Varnecia Phipps, JaDacia Fleming, JaDarrius Granger, Jada Granger, India Robinson, Kelvin Hooker Jr. and Kyle Hooker; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
