Have you ever felt like you’re living in crazy town? Jefferson Street United Methodist Church’s youth dinner theater this year will attempt to take you there.

This year’s performers take on John Patrick’s “The Curious Savage,” a play about the dangers of judging a book by its cover.

The widow Mrs. Savage has been left a large inheritance by her deceased husband and decides to give it to those less fortunate and to those who might use the money to fulfill their lifelong dreams.

Her stepchildren, Samuel, Lily Belle, and Titus, all seemingly upstanding members of society, would prefer Mrs. Savage give them the money and they scheme to have her committed to a sanatorium.

In a madcap series of events filled with eccentric characters and surprising plot twists, Mrs. Savage begins to realize that the world inside the asylum is much more sane that the world outside.

Ultimately, this play reminds me of the story of Jesus’ appearance to travelers on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35).

Like the pilgrim Cleopas, we often don’t take the time to really see those around us. We make assumptions about others based on superficial criteria: how much money they have/don’t have; where they are from; who their friends/associates are; how they dress; etc.

We only become aware of whom people really are when we look beyond those shallow markers and discern their true natures.

“The Curious Savage” offers a cautionary tale for society: In a world where warmth, dignity, and the golden rule have been largely shoved aside, this play reminds us to look beyond appearances and find the good in people.

Our senior players are Mary Evans Kelley, playing Lilly Belle, Seth Blattner, playing Dr. Emmett, and Anna Rodriguez playing Ethel.

Come join us in the fellowship hall of Jefferson Street United Methodist Church for an evening of delicious food and great fun at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and 4 p.m. and Sunday.

Dinner will include succulent roast pork loin, wild rice pilaf, sweet and savory green beans and cookies for dessert.
