NATCHEZ — Even if the urgency of the rising Mississippi River has overshadowed state issues like budget cuts and redistricting, residents have no excuse to skip Monday’s legislative breakfast, chamber leaders said.
In addition to a legislative low down from local state representatives, Natchez City Engineer David Gardner will deliver an update on flood preparations at Chamber of Commerce-sponsored breakfast, which is set from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Natchez Eola Hotel.
Sen. Bob Dearing, a Democrat from Natchez, Sen. Kelvin Butler, a Democrat from Magnolia, and Rep. Sam Mims, a Republican from McComb have confirmed plans to attend the breakfast.
Rep. Robert Johnson, a Democrat from Natchez, is trying to work around his schedule to attend, Hutchins said. Rep. Angela Cockerham, a Democrat from Magnolia, will be working out of the state Monday.
The representatives will follow up on what happened at the recent session, which ended in April, and what those decisions mean for the future, chamber president Debbie Hudson said.
Chamber chairperson of the legislative committee, Stephanie Hutchins, said issues likely to come up at the breakfast include state redistricting, rising gas prices and new animal cruelty laws, to name a few.
Hutchins said the breakfast will also put legislators on hand to discuss what help the state can do to provide assistance and relief to potential flood victims.
The breakfast costs $10 and local leaders and the public are encouraged to attend, Hutchins said.
