Vidalia, Block lose in first round of softball playoffs

SIBLEY, La. — The Vidalia High School Lady Vikings came up just short of pulling off a huge upset of Lakeside High School as the Lady Warriors held on for a 2-1 win Monday afternoon in the first round of the LHSAA Class 2A Softball State Playoffs.
Lakeside, the No. 8 seed, scored two unearned runs on what was Vidalia’s only error of the game, a walk and three base hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a scoreless ball game.
Vidalia, the No 25 seed, got a leadoff single from Angel Kenney. Addison Bennett reached on a bunt single. Kenney scored after Alyssa Cupstid laid down a sacrifice bunt.
“We played a really, really good ball game,” Lady Vikings head coach Forrest Foster said. “That just goes to show when we play like we can, we can play with anybody. We should be much improved next year.”
Becca Cowan got the start for Vidalia and pitched four solid innings before injuring her ankle. She was unable to return. Cockerham came on in relief and pitched two scoreless innings.
Both teams finished with four hits while the Lady Warriors did not commit a single error.
While Lakeside (17-6) moves on to the regional round to take on No. 9 seed Winnfield, Vidalia finishes its season with an overall record of 8-19.
“Next year I expect us to flip that record,” Foster said.
Grand Lake 15, Block 6
LAKE CHARLES, La. — The Block High School Lady Bears saw their season come to an end Monday afternoon as the lost the Grand Lake High School Lady Hornets 15-6 in the first round of the 2018 LHSAA Class 1A Softball State Playoffs.
Neither No. 18 seed Block nor No. 15 seed Grand Lake had the most stellar of records heading into the postseason – the Lady Bears at 2-18 and the Lady Hornets at 7-14.
But Grand Lake had more than enough offense to defeat Block and move to the regional round against No. 2 seed LaSalle High School.
Block finished with an overall record of 2-19.
