Good news abundant last week

Today we enter the final week of Spring Pilgrimage. As both tourists and locals alike engage in the pilgrimage’s culmination, we can also look back at what else has been going on in the community as we remember last week’s good news.

Terries Smith can officially say she is a star student. The Natchez Early College Academy senior recently received the Mississippi Economic Council M.B. Swayze Foundation’s STAR Student award for the 2017-2018 school year. Modest in her success, Smith said she hopes one day to become a pediatrician and operate a children’s home. She is a great example of what is possible when gifted people use their talents to benefit others.

Adams County’s drawn out project on Morgantown Road looks to be making some progress, as a local engineer said the project could be ready to move forward in June. Made difficult by a need to workaround existing utilities in the area, the project could finally address both drainage and road conditions in the area of Morgantown, Booker and Redd Loop roads. Importantly, the project also has been revised to quell fears of residents in the area who worried how much land they might lose during construction. So long as the project does not cause residents any undue hardship, these improvements will be a necessary step in the right direction for an area riddled with roadway needs.

Trinity Episcopal School senior Dee Fleming recently cemented his future as a Division I college athlete, agreeing to join the University of Mississippi’s track and field team on a partial scholarship. After winning individual state titles in both the triple and long jump last year for the Saints, Fleming marks the first person in his immediate family to attend college. Fleming deserves all the success he has achieved, and we wish him further success at the next level.

Throughout the last week of Spring Pilgrimage, remember to take in all the good that happens each day and try to be a part of it.
