Sports reporter for The Natchez Democrat wins award

NATCHEZ — A sports reporter for The Natchez Democrat won second place in the Louisiana-Mississippi Associated Press Broadcast and Media Editors awards announced Saturday.

Emmalee Molay, who has worked in Natchez for just more than one year, won the second-place Breaking News Sports award for her work on “Alcorn Kicker Breaks Record, Plays for Sister with Cerebral Palsy.”

Judges called the article a “story that benefited greatly by knowing about the kicker’s history and his sister’s battle with cerebral palsy.

“We learned a lot from this well-written piece,” judges said.

The article focuses on Corey McCullough, Alcorn State University sophomore and kicker for the university football team.  In the article, McCullough says his inspiration comes from his sister, Erin Marie McCullough, who lives with cerebral palsy.

The 2017 Louisiana-Mississippi Associated Press Broadcast and Media Editors Awards were held Saturday night in New Orleans.
