NATCHEZ — A cyclist who was struck by a car Saturday on Liberty Road is expected to make a swift recovery, police say.
The accident occurred as eight cyclists were embarking on a long trek from Natchez to Nashville via the Natchez Trace.
Just minutes into the first day of the bike ride, however, the plans were dashed when a driver on Liberty Road struck one of the cyclists, Natchez Police Department Chief Walter Armstrong said.
An elderly man, Armstrong said, did not see the cyclist as he drove down Liberty Road.
“He had some vision problems,” Armstrong said. “It was just an accident.”
An ambulance took the Richmond, Va., cyclist to Merit Health Natchez, but Armstrong said her injuries were minor.
Luckily, Armstrong said, all eight cyclists on the journey were doctors.
“She received almost immediate medical attention,” he said.
No arrests are expected in the crash, Armstrong said, and the cyclists plan to continue their bike ride as soon as the Virginia woman is well.
