FERRIDAY — A Louisiana woman was injured Saturday when a black Chevrolet truck hurtled off the road, spun across a large grassy lawn and collided with a tree.

Wesley Brown, who was driving the truck with his girlfriend and three young children, said he was passing a vehicle on U.S. 84, about a mile west of the 84 Quick Stop, when he lost control.

“We hit a patch of water and the next thing I knew, we were spinning,” Brown said. “I’m OK, and (the children are) OK, but she’s hurt.”

Brown winced as he described the wreck, a blue-black bruise growing on his swollen eyelid.

“I don’t know what happened,” he said. “I’m OK. It’s just my neck.”

Inside an ambulance a few yards away, a woman Brown said was his girlfriend cried out in pain.

The three children — all under the age of 12, Brown said — sat quietly in a friend’s car.

When the ambulance backed down the muddy drive and took off west, one child looked worriedly at Brown and asked, “Where are they going?”

“They’re going to help,” a woman in the vehicle said. “They’re taking her to the doctor.”

Tommy Nugent, in whose front yard the Chevrolet crashed, said he has seen several minor wrecks in the curve in front of his house.

“People have jumped that ditch before, but it has never been this bad,” Nugent said.

The black truck’s doors were open and askew in Nugent’s front lawn; a lunchbox and a child’s blanket were left in the mud where they had fallen when the occupants left the vehicle.

“It could have been a lot worse,” Brown said. “But I’m worried.”

Louisiana State Police were in charge of the scene, and would release no details about the condition of Brown’s girlfriend.
